Koh Tarutao is the oldest rock formation in Thailand and past times was submerged below the ocean’s surface. It is more than 500 million years old and was formed in the Cambrian period, which is the period from which most fossils found originate. Most fossils are the remains of different types of arthropods known as Trilobites of which there are thousands of different types. The fossils are buried in layers of shale and sandstone in the Ao Talo Topa, Ao Talo Udang and Ao Malaka areas.
